Starting- From Bread Factory a Cultural Public Space
The investor decision of choosing the site has a strong message: the abandoned bread factory will make and transmit spiritual content in spite of everyday food. However the socreal industrial building has never been the part of the life of the habitants but everyone got in everyday connection with it by his food. With the realization of this project this connection will be rewritten and the factory services such a food for the communities which will be everyday food, not only festive occasion. It will have community-forming power, so it will be a real cultural public space where people can change information, knowledge and be part of creation. Understanding the project this was our starting point how to construct from an isolated industrial building without context a multifunctional complexum with important public functions which influences its environment in a good way and starts living processes.
Far and close space connection
The area is one of the busiest transport and tourism corridor, and also a destination so it can count with transit visitors and tourists. The car users who arriving from afar can be waited from the planned new bypass. The pedestrians, the bike riders and who travelles by public transport can arrive from the city center or from the bike paths along lake Balaton.
Connections with public spaces, the characters of the public spaces
The public spaces around the site are quiet residental streets which are only close to the site but not open it. Now it is impossible to turn down from the bypass which can be very busy. The entrance was originally a dead end and it is not suitable for high turnover.
The isolation can be abolished with letting in the passengers from the residental streets to the site because of the planned public function, moreover the dead end can be extended to the Déli street and the neighborhood streets’ circulation can be better. Opening of the front of the Déli street takes the site reachable directly from the city center. The side of the Szekrényessy road is predestinated for the motor vehicles and services. So the urban and local traffic (pedestrians and bikers) will arrive from Déli street and residental streets, and motor vehicles will arrive from the bypass.
Landscaping, public space forming and building up
The parts of the existing building which are worth for keeping sign the site of the first period, which is in North and it is easy to close from the city. The second period is the South part of the site which can be reached from the bypass so the works will not disturb the completed parts and a new annexe in North-West orientation divides the space.
The first element of the space is the arrival square which opens the complexum in the front of the Déli street.
From here under the new building extension we arrive at the event space which is surrounded by the existing and new annexes which direct the visitors toward the main entrance. The level of the space is lifted because it matches the floor level of the building. Under the East-West annexe passing the main entrance the space continues in the park in South which has garden and parking functions. The level of the park is sunk so a ramp connects to the event space. The North-South inner service road connects in the South end of the park to the Szekrényessy road, and in North it arrives at Déli street near arrival space.
The public space system is integrated to the urban network running as a rug around and under the complexum because the second period of the establishment is upper than the sunk space level so it gives space to the garden and parking and the ground rests accessible. The patterns of the „rug” are the garden and landscape units, the „pixels” which give dimension to the space and they match with their materials to the functions, but they are flexible for different functions.
Architectural considerations
Because of its program and dimension, the complexum has a symbolic force and an important message. It can be a dominant establishment of this countryside but it has also a main role in the town life. The architectural conception follows the diversity of the task in the field of building shape and the material using, dividing the spacial and timing periods and functions. We used three very different architectural languages for the different periods.
Preservative:
We keep the main and West annexe of the existing building of the Bread Factory, the flour tower and the head building of the office but we clean the extensions in the Nort and West. Instead of the East annexe there is a glass-steel porch connected to the space.
Integrating:
In the first period we extended the puritan, rational brick buildings with glass and steel annexes in the North and South side which also get the separating walls of the event space. The architecture of the first period preserving the important parts of the building places into a new context, integrates into a modern composition. The main role is integrating which searches the existing structures strength and attaches with a contrast of material using. The dominant material is glass and also there are steel and concrete. The second period is very different from it.
Parasitical:
The second period utilizes of the existing structures as a parasite and settles on the systems. This relationship also appears in the architectural forming, the building grows from the center space as an organism and it returns with writing an increasing loop where crosses itself and turns toward the event space. The logic of space forming is different from the first period there are not editing and styling rules, the space flows free with the functional needs and possibilities of the space. When it grows from the building it leaves the ground to give place for the park and parking. The solid amorph body somewhere is divided with green walls and windows, there are extensive roof gardens, solar cells on the top of the building. The materials are heavy-duty lattice structure and last generation light but hard composit.
Location of functions:
Building of the factory: The preserved building part was utilized by its sizes and rates. The main annexe of the hall at the West part is completed with a gallery floor which is an exhibition space. In the North side toward Déli street using the possibility of orientation and the original ramp roof with consols the exhibition hall rises as a glass box toward the center. The West narrower hall takes space the visual mechanics, in spite of the East annexe there is the new glass porch of the event and exhibition hall cennected with the court. In the office head-building exhibitions take place , there is the space of museum education in the first floor, the added new second storey is for administration. The old flour tower gives place for the vertical transport (staircase and elevator), and there are services spaces in the exhibition floor, at the top there is a small shop and cafe.
The added parts of the first phase: the cross annexes of the first phase makes two gates. The first is the urban public space entrance at Déli utca, the square of entering to 320°. The connecting wing turns from the top of the Bread Factory’s administration building as a bridge along the noname street making a new building. It contains administration functions, apartmants, ateliers and a cafe opening toward the space, and also an occasional exhibition space, art shop. In the other side of the square, in South there is the gate which connects the event hall and the sunk park with a ramp which leads to the park and to the event hall from the parking. The robuster middle cross annexe has the main functions across a center distribution space, a lobby: a studio theater with a stage opening toward the event hall, a restaurant in the connecting part which turns toward the event space with a terrace and a theater and conference room as a huge block in the West side.
The supply of the stage is solved across the service entrance, the hydraulic lift table gets the materials to the places in the levels. The entrances of the public, the actors and services are divided, and also the service rooms and lavatories. The rehearsal room is in the top floor. The top of the theatre block is steep and terrace design following the inner space geometry and gives space for an extensive roof garden which has an educational and a presentation function as well. The South connecting annexe connects in the ground floor to the sunk park so there is the entrance from the parking. There are the main service rooms for the public: lavatories, cloakroom, and rooms for operation of the building. Also in this floor there are supply rooms, the kitchen which is connected with the restaurant with an elevator.
From North the exhibition halls of the factory runs also to the center lobby, and from South the second period functions. Naturally the traffic between the floors in the center hall is also constructed for handicapped people, and has the service rooms for the public.
II. phase: The main function of the parasitical building are a permanent exhibition and interactive presentation rooms. In the ground floor there are the gate and the educational rooms, the ceiling like an upward ramp is orientated and making a permanently dynamic changing exhibition space for the interactive functions where turns back to the vertical system of traffic and also has an alternative exit to the roof terraces.
Starting from the existing building the architectural rehabilitation gets to the free constructed structure from a socreal factory building.

Fitting into the urban structure
The new cultural center takes a special place in the life of the town. The outsanding status explains that the building of the site do not be like an island. It is necessary to integrate the public spaces nearby into the urban structure. The use of neighborhood spaces is very different, so we make transitional spaces at the border of the plot and around it. The main departure space is also a transitional space which welcomes the arriving people from the town in the North side and the small square opening to the streets which is connected with the outdoor spaces of the estate so it can be used as a park. For the sake of tranquility of the neighborhood spaces the transitional spaces get also a defensive and separation function: grove lines for the residental area and multilevel vegetation with promenade will be toward the busy Szekrényessy road.
Functional units
I. new urban public spaces:
strong connecting points into the urban structure / the departure spaces and forums near the building
Departure space- main entrance
The „320°” totem as a landmark sign gives emphasis to the main entrance whose multimedia projecting system informs about the actual programs. It functions also as a virtual poster. The material of the totem is corten steel which fits into the original brick facade of the factory. Laser cutting letters draw the logo 320° int he totem which gets light from the inside of the totem at nights. The pool (as a decoration) is in contrasted with the elements of the facade.
Forum- main court
The aim was to make an indoor garden feeling with the design of the event hall, and also preventing the transparency of the space. So the vegetation is mulch and the trees have high and branching boles and loose crown (these trees with beautiful boles are floodlit as statues). We make low and small islands with landscaping in the pixel system (we explicate the system in the next chapter), which buttress are seats.There can be art projects with many media. The gate made by the building through we can walk to the forum has walls and the water falling from the canopy can be projection surface. An outdoor auditorium can work from two directions. A part of the court and the buffet terrace is used for contemporary exhibitions.
New urban public space toward the residental area
The area is stepped from the event hall next to the outdoor stage toward the catchment basin, the forum is connected with a wide ramp on the otherside between the two levels. Near the cultural centre connecting the two small streets there is a small space which can be built as an urban square which is the entrance of the new public park and the departure space of the estate.
II. parking and public park:
The daytime empty parking area will be formed (the accessibility,the green area, the street furniture) that people can use it as a park.
Under the ’floating snake building’ there is park and garden function but if there is a big event the place can be used as parking. The parking need is primarily insured by the parkings in the edge of the site. The inner parking places can be opened when there are big events. This functional duality is mapped with the material using. The main aspect of the choosing the outside flooring was that they must have a green space character (see explaining illustration on 4th board?). It means that all the outside floorings are pervious and more of them is green flooring (see explaining illustration on 5th board). The different flooring textures make playful surface which hide the parking function.
Faithful for the spirit of space this spun motive reflects to the artistic and natural diversity and playfulness. The scale and the materials of its units also appear in other public spaces. The units (pixels) have different characters. Some of them makes homogenous surfaces (pavements, green surfaces or mineral surfaces), other pixels are different types of plants and environment compositions. This typology makes the system variable. The elements are bordered by wood and steel sunk edges. The system is hold together visually by the narrow pavemant lines running in the whole site, these make the main structure. In spite of the mosaic-like sight the graphic motive unifies the sight with the power of the perspective.
For emphasizing the „light-well” a special design element gets to the space surrounded by the annexe above the „spun garden”. The huge gravel shape luminaires multiply the light with their reflecting surfaces daytime, at night they emit light – programmable light show with led technology.
III. Park zone / promenade / green buffer zones
The park zone runs as a ribbon the East side of the site which contains a promenade, planted terraces and a precipitation collector lake. We can know the water Nature Trail by walking the pier. The new establishment area connects with the residential area by a grove buffer zone. We suggest a grove promenade with buffer trees along the Szekrényessy road which has double functions: buffering and separating.
IV. Roof gardens, green walls
Roof gardens:
1.experimental and „student gardens”: the possibilities of grownig plants in urban spaces (reducing of fertile lands, the question of catering the cities, locally grown food in spite of CO2 emmisions)
2.nature trail about the Hungarian dry grasslands and using them in building insulation: the role of the roof gardens in biodiversity, in building energy and microclimate improvement (temperature, humidity, air pollution). There is a possibility to show the technologies (building of roof gardens and green walls)
Sustainability
In the interest of realization of sustainable development we suggest with our conception: – the recycling of the materials from the demolition at the substructions of the pavement – ecological principles in material using: pervious and green pavements and native/resistant plants which need less irrigation and reservation – using of precipitation for irrigation and making a precipitation collector lake which is a natural biotope (biological purification, water filter effect) – extensive and intensive roof gardens (water retention, insulation, improving the microclimate)
